“Music Outside the Box,” the brainchild of Music Director Evan Meccarello, was an event sponsored by the Binghamton Community Orchestra, in collaboration with Broome County Music Educators’ Association. The event took place in the height of the pandemic, when local student musicians lost so many opportunities to perform music together with their peers, either in school, in community groups, in county-wide festival bands, choruses and orchestras, or any other means of doing what musicians do, which is to play together.
In answer to this crisis, Maestro Meccarello came up with a way for high school music students to play together, virtually! Musicians from the Binghamton Community Orchestra and teachers from BCMEA worked together with Meccarello to help make this dream come true. In April 2021, students came together on a Friday and Saturday through the Zoom platform, to rehearse, and then to perform together. The performance was recorded and presented to the parents the next day. The recording was later released to the public on the Binghamton Community Orchestra website.
